Automotive Design

The invention of the automobile has led to a new bread of designer. A moving object provides new constraints in shape and function that a static object does not. These designers have in turn given us some of the most beautiful and desirable objects.

There are really two sides to designing a car, the automotive engineer takes care of the mechanical and functional side whilst the automotive designer will look at shape, style and ergonomics of the vehicle. These two design disciplines will never sit side by side without some compromise due to the way they effect each other. Aerodynamics for instance requires the body take on a clear smooth shape and if taken to the extreme will lead to the one pure aerodynamic shape. This however goes against the principle of creating something unique or different that stands out from the crowd. This is ultimately the goal of the car designer, to make something desirable that will outsell the competition.

It's not just he exterior design that matters although that is what will attract the buyer in the first instance. Modern cars are packed full of technology with the latest in digital instrumentation, entertainment systems, sat-nav and many computer controlled driver aids. All of which the designer will have to carefully integrate into the internal space. Keeping the overall theme integrity whilst maintaining the ergonomic functionality of the whole vehicle.

All of this goes to build the brand of the manufacturer. Brand awareness is hugely important in the automotive industry and styling has to emphasize that. Throughout the range from small to large they will all display elements of that corporate image.

No car design would be complete without the external decor or graphics. That set apart not only manufacturer but distinguishes model and trim level. It can add sophistication or sporting pedegree. This is where the target audience is hooked.
